Pro-Monarchy sentiment rises as Canadians get new $20 Bill

The Bank of Canada’s unveiling of the new vertical $20 polymer bank note featuring King Charles III comes amid a notable shift in public sentiment regarding the Crown. While debates over Canada's ties to the British monarchy have historically leaned toward severing them, recent polling data highlights a resurgence in support driven by geopolitical identity.
According to data compiled by Ipsos, pro-monarchy sentiment has gained ground as Canadians increasingly view the institution as a key cultural differentiator from the United States.
  • National Identity: 66% of surveyed Canadians agree that the relationship with the monarchy serves a useful purpose by maintaining a distinct identity separate from the U.S., a significant increase from 54% in April 2023. [1]
  • Heritage and Values: 65% of respondents feel that traditional ties to the monarchy are vital to Canadian heritage and help define the country's unique national character, up from 58% two years prior. [1]
  • Approval of the Sovereign: King Charles III’s individual approval rating has also seen upward momentum, with 59% of Canadians agreeing that he is performing well in his role as monarch.
While generational divides and regional challenges persist—particularly within Quebec—the data demonstrates that the symbols chosen for Canada's new physical currency reflect a broader domestic desire to preserve institutional traditions that distinguish the nation globally.
