Where to find reliable information about your healthcare professional online

NC) We want our healthcare system to be consumer-focused, and increasingly turn to the internet to find information about treatment options, safety and quality of care.

That's one reason why Ontario's health regulators are putting dependable information about regulated health professionals online. The regulators are called colleges, and they oversee 28 health professions, including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, chiropractors, and many more. There are over 300,000 Ontario health professionals listed in public registers, which you can search anytime.

Want to know if your doctor is allowed to practise in Ontario? Want to find a pharmacist who speaks your language? Are you looking for a qualified midwife with a practice near you? These are just some of the things you can learn by searching a college's public register.

By law, every college must publish a profile of each of their member's history. The standards for becoming and staying a member of a regulated health profession are very high. When you search through a register by name, you can get answers to questions like these:

Is this provider a member in good standing?

When did they register to practise in Ontario?

Where do they provide services?

Have they had restrictions put on their practice because of professional misconduct?

If you can't find your provider on a register, contact the college that regulates their profession through their website.
