Suns’ Chris Paul Tested Positive for COVID Despite Vaccination, Enters Health Protocols

The Phoenix Suns were dealt a huge blow Wednesday as guard Chris Paul entered the NBA’s health and safety protocols after testing positive for COVID-19.

Paul had received the Pfizer vaccine in February, Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro reports.

The Suns confirmed Paul was placed in health and safety protocols and said they will provide a health update on Saturday. Head coach Monty Williams spoke to reporters Wednesday and said the Suns had practiced the past two days.

The NBA’s rules for COVID-related isolation periods have evolved throughout the season in correlation with increasing vaccine numbers. ESPN reports that if Paul is already vaccinated against COVID-19, he could be facing a shorter absence from the Suns.

ESPN’s Matt Barnes said on The Jump that he spoke to Paul Wednesday morning and confirmed that he is vaccinated.

The NBA Players Association said Wednesday that of the 164 players tested for COVID-19 since June 9, one new player has returned a confirmed positive test.
