'I FELL TO THE FLOOR': Whitby man wins $55M Lotto Max

A Whitby man who is now a millionaire 55 times over says he is going to take things slow and learn how to be rich.

Dwayne Williams, 35,  scored big in the April 5 draw after purchasing his ticket at the CNIB Lottery Kiosk in Walmart on Baldwin St. in Whitby.

He picked up his cheque at the downtown Toronto OLG headquarters on Thursday.

As a rule, Williams — a married father of two — routinely checks his tickets the Saturday morning after the draw, but the family was in a hurry to get to the mall and complete errands.

While driving, the family heard the winning ticket was sold in the Oshawa area and his wife joked that they were the winners.

Williams checked his ticket when he returned home.

“I saw the Free Play notice first, that’s when my eye went on the screen but in my head I knew something looked different than usual and that’s when I focused on the $55 and thought at first I’d won $55,000 — but then I counted all the zeros. All this went through my mind in a split second,” he said.

Williams screamed and rushed upstairs to share the news with his wife.

“I fell to the floor and we all piled on top of each other celebrating,” he said, adding he took a couple of weeks to claim the prize

“It’s such a life changing event. I wanted to think through the process, prepare for the future and clear my mind,” he said.

“(It’s) a new chapter in our lives.

The technology entrepreneur plans to invest in his business, buy a luxury car and travel to Europe.
