Average Self-Published CreateSpace Authors Makes Less Than $100 (Per Year) on Amazon

There is really no standard to determine the average a self-published writer make on Amazon. According to Derek Murphy, an Indie author and book designer, “The vast majority of books sell less than ten copies. $100 a year as John K. says, is a good guess, but if that’s ‘average’ consider that 50% of the books published don’t make even that much.”

The statistics are not all poor. There are authors that make as much as $70,000 to $250,000 a month. The major problem is that only maybe a thousand out of the at least a million books published in a year make all the money. The indie genre is the most prominent on Amazon with at least half of the books on Amazon bestsellers list belonging to authors in this genre.

While the genre your book falls into may affect your sales, the benefits of self-publishing are still huge. For example, if a book published traditionally makes $100,000 in a month, the author might end up getting just $7,000. On the contrary, if a self-published book makes $100,000 in a month, the author might get up to $70,000.

According to Digital Book World and Writer’s Digest survey published by Forbes, “the median income range of self-published authors is under $5,000 and nearly 20% of self-published authors report deriving no income from their writing.”

Some genres sell better than others

According to Derek Murphy, “YA fantasy romances sell 10x as much as literary memoirs, which sell 10x as much as books on bowling.” On this premise, an author of literary memoirs who earns $5,000 a month can be said to be successful while an author in the fantasy romance genre that makes the same amount can be termed unsuccessful. The emphasis is on the readership.

An average author can be described as an author that writes what they feel and publish. Don't be an average author. The difference between a failed and a successful author is usually the level of research they put into their work. Ample research can also save you from becoming a failed author that spends more on their book than they earn.

What makes the difference?

According to John Kremer, the author of "1001 Ways to Market Your Books", there are a few things that a self-published author can do to make thousands or more per month.

1. Publish only quality books

Reviews can make or break your book in eBook sales. The only way to get good reviews is to work with industry professionals like the self-publishing service offered by Agora Publishing. AgoraPublishing.com helps writers from editing to formatting which is essential for creating quality books with a great reader experience. Unfortunately, these are services you won’t get when you rely on CreateSpace.com.

2. Create a good book cover

Study the cover of the top-grossing books in your genre. What are the authors doing with their book description and author bio? Make your book as closely related to the best and you should expect good sales from your book too.
