Taxi Driver Dead after Car Struck by Car in York Mills

A taxi driver is dead after a two-car collision in the neighbourhood of York Mills early Sunday.

Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook, spokesperson for Toronto Police Service, said police received a call about the crash in the area of York Mills Road and Old Yonge Street at about 2:55 a.m.

She said a vehicle eastbound on York Mills lost control, struck a pole, veered into oncoming lanes and hit the taxi cab. The taxi driver, the only occupant of his vehicle, had to be extricated.

He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead there.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the taxi cab is being investigated. He suffered minor injuries in the crash and was taken to hospital.

Douglas-Cook said no charges have been laid and police are awaiting a response from its traffic reconstruction team before deciding how to proceed.

Kristine Hubbard, operations manager of Beck Taxi Limited, expressed condolences to the family of the driver.

"We are devastated to hear the news about this morning's accident," Hubbard said in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. We will do whatever we can to support Toronto police in their investigation."

York Mills Road, which was closed from Old Yonge Street to Upper Highland Crescent to allow officers to investigate, has been reopened.
